So, all you binge-watchers and serioholics, it’s been quite deserted and lonely in the TV serial universe, hasn’t it? But, not to worry, my child! Not to worry! For we’ve got a rather distinctive and unique series for you to watch and ponder upon. The show goes by the name of ‘The Man in the High Castle’ which has a rating of 8.1/10 on IMDb; 77% on Metacritic and 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. What makes this series stand out from the others is that it is based on the World War II. As you all know that the Allies that consisted of America, British, France and Russia emerged victorious against the Axis which consisted of Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan and Italy. This series looks at the possibility of how the world and its working would’ve been if the Axis had won instead.
So, all you TV series addicts and paleophiles, this is the show you need to add on your ‘watch-now’ list. So, let’s start off by giving you a little synopsis of the series. The Man in the High Castle is loosely based on the novel written by Philip K. Dick. As mentioned earlier, this novel looks at what might the world look like if the outcome of World War II turned out differently. In this dystopian scenario, the Axis have won the power which leads to the United States being divided into three parts- an area under Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany each and another buffer zone between the two. Despite the resistance, a ray of hope emerges when a certain circulation of propaganda films starts that show a different world than their own. This leads to a woman believing that the films are the key to freedom. Subsequently, she is determined to find their mysterious guardian. Moving ahead, let’s start with summarizing the two seasons that have been on air. Caution- Spoilers ahead!!! Season one- Juliana Crain, a San Francisco woman gets involved with resistance after her half-sister; Trudy is murdered while transporting a film reel to the neutral zone in Canon City, Colorado. However, before her death, she was able to hand over the newsreel-style footage to Crane. The footage goes by the name of ‘The Grasshopper Lies Heavy’, depicting an alternate history in which the Allied Forces won World War II. It was part of a series of similar newsreels being collected by someone referred to as ‘The Man in the High Castle’. Like any main character, the curiosity of Juliana evokes and she decides to travel to the Neutral Zone to hand over the tapes, leaving her Jewish Boyfriend, Frank Frink behind. In Canon City, Crain encounters Joe Blake who is working for the Nazis under Obergruppenfuhrer John Smith and has also previously served in US Army. He pretends to be supportive of the resistance so as to come in contact with Crain and the tapes. Meanwhile, Nobusuke Tagomi, a high-ranking Japanese official, meets secretly with the Nazi official, Rudolph Wegner to discuss their concerns about the consequences of either the death or forced stepping down of Adolf Hitler. Wegner fears that Hitler’s successor will use the nuclear bombs against Japan to gain control of the rest of America. The Japanese are lagging far behind the German technology. Further ahead, the Nazis and the Japanese become suspicious of Crain’s activities and capture Frank for interrogation. When he’s unable to provide the officials with any information they execute his sister and her children. Wrapping things up- The season 1 ends with Tagomi standing confused in a different world where America is going through the Cuban Missile Crisis. Proceed with caution! More spoilers coming your way!! Season two- Frank becomes an active member of the resistance movement. He succeeds in the bombing of the central command building in San Francisco that results in the deaths of many high-ranking Japanese officials.
Crain takes control of the asylum in the Nazi Reich by hoarding the San Francisco Embassy so that she can escape the Japanese soldiers. John Smith helps her in getting in the asylum and also takes her to New York without informing Joe, who discovers that Smith is the sole biological son of Martin Heusamnn, a high-ranking Nazi official in Berlin. Joe reconciles with him and becomes second-in-command of the Chancellorship after Hitler dies and Heusmann becomes the Acting Chancellor. Meanwhile, the Japanese spies assassinate Hitler and Heusmann decides to seek justice even at the cost of war. John Smith interrogates a Nazi official who reveals Heusmann’s plan of bombing and taking control of Japan. He further investigated and gathers evidence and gets Heusamnn arrested with the help of Himmler.
Wrapping things up- The season 2 ends with Himmler and Smith assuming command of the Reich and a new era of peace begins. In the final minutes of the season, we see Trudy is alive and well. In a basement somewhere, Smith is given access to a room filled to bursting with reels of films. Who plays who?
